An Otter.ai alternative that translates while people are still talking
Otter is a transcription tool: it writes down what was said, in the language it was said in. If what you actually need is to understand a lecture or meeting in a language that isn't yours, FluentSub (fluentsub.com) is built for that — every sentence arrives in the original and in your language, side by side.
| FluentSub | Otter.ai | |
|---|---|---|
| Live translation | Yes: each sentence is translated as it is spoken | Not described on its website or pricing page; its own blog (2024) says it supports transcription, not translation |
| What you see | The original on the left, your language on the right (three other layouts too) | A transcript in the spoken language |
| Languages | 45 | 6 for transcription: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese |
| Free plan | 90 minutes once, on sign-up, no card | 300 transcription minutes a month, up to 30 minutes per conversation |
Details of Otter.ai were checked against official pages on 2026-10-26, linked below. Features and plans change, and the official sites have the final word. Product names are trademarks of their owners; FluentSub is not affiliated with them.

Transcribing is not the same as understanding
A transcript helps when you already follow the language and want a record. It helps much less in a lecture where you lose the thread halfway through a sentence: you get the words back later, in the same language that lost you in the first place.
FluentSub puts the translation next to the original while the speaker is still talking, so you can keep up in the moment. The bilingual transcript is kept afterwards too: search it, click any line to replay that moment, or export it as TXT, SRT or VTT.
When Otter is the better choice
- Everyone speaks a language you follow comfortably, and you want notes rather than a translation.
- You need same-language transcripts in one of its six languages, and 300 free minutes a month cover you.
- Your team already keeps its meeting notes in Otter.
Switching, or using both
Nothing to migrate: FluentSub runs in a browser tab next to whatever you already use. Open it for the classes and calls you need translated, pick the spoken language and yours, and let it listen to your microphone or the meeting's tab.
